Odisha’s Coffee Cultivation Scheme: Boosting Rural Prosperity and Biodiversity

by Nita Mishra

The Odisha cabinet has given the green light to a new initiative set to benefit approximately 6000 farmers across 15 districts. The scheme, known as the Odisha Coffee Development Project, aims to expand coffee cultivation from the existing 9000 hectares to 12000 hectares by the fiscal year 2024-25. This endeavor is poised to provide a significant boost to farmers and the rural economy.

Cultivating Opportunities and Income

The project holds promise as it not only increases the area under coffee plantation but also extends vital support to coffee growers. Recognizing coffee as a high-value cash crop, the scheme aims to unlock income and employment prospects for the rural population.

Ideal Climate for Coffee Growth

Odisha, with its conducive climate and soil, is well-suited for growing both Arabica and Robusta varieties of coffee. Currently contributing about 2% of the nation’s total production, the state produces approximately 6000 metric tonnes of coffee annually.

Holistic Support for Farmers

Implemented by the Odisha State Horticulture Mission (OSHM) in collaboration with the Coffee Board of India, the scheme ensures a comprehensive approach. Farmers will receive a substantial 75% subsidy from OSHM for various aspects, including planting materials, fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation facilities, and processing units.

Technical Guidance and Market Linkages

Partnering with the Coffee Board of India adds a layer of expertise to the initiative. The board will extend technical guidance, quality certification, and crucial market linkages, empowering farmers with the tools needed for successful coffee cultivation.

Boosting Livelihoods and Biodiversity Conservation

With an anticipated positive impact on the income and livelihoods of coffee growers, the scheme also aligns with ecological concerns. By conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable practices, the initiative aims to safeguard the delicate ecology of coffee-growing regions, particularly those dominated by tribal communities.

In summary, the Odisha Coffee Development Project signifies a pivotal step towards transforming the agricultural landscape, fostering economic growth, and preserving the environment in the state.
