by Nita Mishra

AIIMS Bhubaneswar has reached a new milestone with the introduction of a groundbreaking service for the placement of Artificial Urinary Sphincters (AUS), marking a significant leap forward in urological care.

This pioneering service, a first of its kind in Odisha, promises renewed hope and enhanced quality of life for patients grappling with severe urinary incontinence. Until now, such advanced implantation procedures were only accessible in major metropolitan cities.

The Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS) implantation procedure stands as a gold standard treatment for urinary incontinence resistant to conventional therapies. It caters particularly to patients affected by urinary incontinence following prostate surgery, spinal cord injuries, or other conditions impacting urinary control.

Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Biswas, the Executive Director, lauded the team of doctors for this innovative service. He remarked, “The Department of Urology at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar has consistently upheld its commitment to providing world-class care at the forefront of technology and innovation. With the advent of Artificial Urinary Sphincter implantation services, the people of Odisha and Eastern India can access treatment locally, sparing them the need to travel to other states.”

The AUS program at AIIMS Bhubaneswar will be spearheaded by a team of highly skilled urologists and surgeons adept in the latest techniques and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Dr. Sambit Tripathy, Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology, emphasized, “The initiation of AUS implantation services signifies a significant stride in our dedication to offering comprehensive and advanced medical care.” Dr. Prasant Nayak, Professor and Head of the Department of Urology, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Our commitment lies in ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients and enhancing their quality of life. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Director Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Biswas for his unwavering support in our pursuit to bring cutting-edge urological care to the people of Odisha. We are also indebted to our patients for their unwavering trust and faith.”

The Medical Superintendent of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, extended congratulations and felicitations to the doctors of the Department of Urology for this remarkable achievement.
