Remembering The Late Renowned Actor and Director, Dr. Sachi Das

Renowned actor and revered figure in the Odia cinema and theater world, Dr. Sachi Das, breathed his last on Thursday. He passed away around 9:30 in the morning while undergoing treatment. At the time of his demise, he was 88 years old. Besides being a prolific actor, he also carved a successful path as a director.

The news of his passing has evoked deep sorrow not only in his birthplace, Bari, but across the entire state. Especially among the artistic community and his admirers, this news has brought profound grief. Born into an affluent family, Sachi Das harbored a deep love for the arts since childhood. As he grew older, he established himself as a respected figure in the world of performing arts. He acted in numerous films and mega serials and gained fame as a director as well. His direction of the play “Shaguna Basichi Dena Melai” was particularly successful and garnered widespread popularity.

His mortal remains were brought from Cuttack to his residence in Anandapur and were cremated in the ancestral village crematorium.

The Doyen of the Theater World: Born in 1936 in the Jajpur district of Bari, Dr. Sachi Das joined the theater in 1958 and never looked back. He acted in more than 500 plays, directed over 100, and even authored more than 400. In the world of Odia theater, he is considered the patriarch.

Recipient of Numerous Awards and Honors: Sachi Das received accolades and awards for his acting and direction multiple times. He was honored with the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award in 2018, a Doctorate from Utkal University of Culture in 2018, the Kavi Samrat Upendra Bhanja Award in 2015, the Odisha State Music and Drama Academy Award in 2000-2001, the Centenary Artist Honor in 2010, the Vaanichitra Award in 2014, and the Ajeet Natiya Award in 2017.
