Odisha Forest Department Initiates Three-Day Dolphin Census in Bhitarkanika National Park

In a concerted effort to monitor and protect the diverse aquatic life in Odisha Forest Department is set to embark on a comprehensive three-day dolphin census from January 20 to 22. This annual initiative will cover the expansive regions of Bhitarkanika National Park, Gahirmatha Sanctuary, and the adjacent sea area.

Precision in Population Assessment

Rajnagar Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Sudarshan Yadav shared insights into the unique census, emphasizing its significance in tracking the population of five distinct dolphin species present in the state. While traditionally conducted in December, this year’s census has been rescheduled to the third week of January.

River and Sea Enumeration Zones

The census will extend its focus from the Dhamara River mouth to the Devi River mouth, encompassing key river areas. This strategic approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of dolphin populations dwelling in the riverine habitats and adjoining sea territories.

Equipped for Precision

To ensure accurate data collection, the survey teams will be equipped with state-of-the-art tools, including cameras and advanced GPS equipment. These technological aids enhance the efficiency of the census, providing valuable insights into the health and distribution of the dolphin population.
