The Initiative

At its core, Project Vidya addresses multifaceted challenges in rural education. Beyond deploying additional teachers, the program provides tailored resources to governments schools. For instance, schools in Jamkhani now have access to curated reference books for Classes IX and X, while Ghogharpalli schools received science kits for interactive exhibitions. These materials are designed to align with the Odisha state curriculum, ensuring relevance. The initiative has also allocated funds for repairing classroom infrastructure—such as replacing broken furniture and installing adequate sanitation facilities—in 18 schools. Notably, all interventions are executed in consultation with local education authorities, ensuring communitybuy-in and sustainability.

One of Project Vidya’s most striking features is its recruitment of teachers from neighboring communities. The 21 additional educators deployed under this program are sourced from villages like Kuraloi and Jamkhani, where they undergo a brief orientation before being assigned to schools. This approach not only mitigates teacher shortages but also fosters a sense of ownership among educators. For example, Lalita Padhan, a teacher from Bartap Project Upper Primary School in Kuraloi, noted that teaching locally allowed her to understand students’ cultural context better. _"When I teach in my own village, children feel more comfortable participating," she shared, adding that this familiarity has reduced dropout rates in her school by 8%.

Comprehensive Approach

To create an engaging learning environment, Project Vidya integrates academic support with extracurricular activities. In 12 participating schools, dedicated periods are allocated for students to attend remedial classes in Mathematics, Science, and English. These sessions, led by volunteer teachers and community members, focus on foundational concepts. For instance, in Jamkhani, students who struggled with basic algebra saw a 20% improvement in their mid-year assessments after targeted coaching. Additionally, the program organizes monthly science fairs where students present projects on local environmental issues, such as soil degradation in Ghogharpalli. These events have boosted students’ scientific curiosity and public speaking skills.

Sports infrastructure has also been prioritized. Each school received sports equipment, including badminton courts and cricket gear, which has encouraged physical activity alongside academics. Moreover, 78% of students in Classes IX and X now meet or exceed state-wide learning benchmarks in Mathematics and English. The program’s focus on exam preparedness has yielded notable results: during FY 26, 11 students from Jamkhani and Ghogharpalli qualified for the Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya (OAV) entrance exam, securing admission to Odisha’s model residential schools. Similarly, 4 students from these areas passed the Bruti Examination, a scholarship test that supports continued education for economically disadvantaged learners.

Broader Community Impact

Project Vidya is part of Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines’ larger ecosystem of community development. Since its inception, the company’s initiatives have benefited over 200,000 people across 26 villages. These efforts include healthcare camps, vocational training programs, and women’s self-help groups. For example, in Kuraloi, vocational training in tailoring and agriculture has created employment opportunities for 50 local youth, many of whom are now self-employed. The integration of education with livelihood programs ensures a systemic approach to development.
