Express News Service reported on 25 July 2026 at 1:48 am that a 40-year-old man, Bedlal Patel, allegedly hacked his younger brother to death with an axe at Nuadihi village under Hemgir police limits in Sundargarh district. The incident occurred on Thursday night around 11 pm after a bitter quarrel between the siblings. According to the Hemgir police station IIC, Manoranjan Bisi, the deceased, Delal Patel (35), was known to consume alcohol and occasionally stole small household items from the house to obtain money. Bedlal Patel, the accused, was said to be livid over his brother's bad habit and had frequently quarrelled with him. On the fateful night, the brothers engaged in a fierce quarrel; Delal hit Bedlal and threatened to beat him up, which provoked the accused. In a fit of rage, Bedlal allegedly assaulted Delal on the neck with an axe, causing instant death. Police were informed, reached the scene, seized the body for autopsy, and registered a murder case. Bedlal was arrested on Friday and produced before the court. The IIC added that the murder stemmed directly from the family feud and the accused's anger over his brother's habitual behaviour. The police station's IIC, Manoranjan Bisi, said that Delal used to consume alcohol and was occasionally involved in stealing small household items from the house to get money. Bedlal was reportedly livid over his brother’s bad habit and frequently quarrelled with him. Bisi said on the fateful night, the brothers picked up a fierce quarrel following which Delal hit Bedlal and threatened to beat him up. The accused got provoked and in a fit of rage, allegedly assaulted his younger sibling on the neck with an axe. Delal died on the spot. On being informed, police reached the spot and seized the body for autopsy. After registering a murder case, police arrested the accused and produced him in court, the IIC added. The accused, Bedlal Patel, was taken into custody and presented before the magistrate as per legal procedure. The victim, Delal Patel, was identified as the younger brother of the accused. The weapon used in the attack was an axe, which was seized by the police as part of the evidence. The case is being processed under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for murder. The incident took place within the jurisdiction of Hemgir police station, Sundargarh district, Odisha.
