Rural Sports Revolution: Sundargarh's 500+ Athletes Rise Through TPWODL Initiative
In just under a year, TPWODL's grassroots sports program in Sundargarh has exceeded expectations, training over 500 athletes and sending them to state and national competitions, while promoting gender inclusion and career pathways through sports.

A Grassroots Explosion of Talent
In a district where the echoes of tribal traditions still resonate through the undulating hills of Khandadhar Falls and the sacred Vedvyas Temple, a new chapter is being written in the realm of sports. TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL) has ignited a rural sporting revolution in Sundargarh, a district often overlooked for its potential but now at the forefront of Odisha’s athletic renaissance. What began as a modest corporate social responsibility (CSR) project under TPWODL’s Trust of People (TOP) has grown into a formidable force, reshaping the landscape of sports in one of Odisha’s most tribal-dominated regions. The initiative, launched in August 2025, has already surpassed its phase targets, enrolling over 500 young athletes in 40 villages and propelling local talent onto state and national podiums.
From Local Fields to National Arenas
The program’s success lies in its tailored approach to uncovering and nurturing talent in Football, Athletics, and Kho-Kho. With structured coaching sessions conducted in 40 villages across Sundargarh, the initiative has become a beacon for rural youth. “We have 25 coaching days every month, ensuring consistent training even in the most remote areas,” explained Parveen Verma, CEO of TPWODL. The program equips athletes with not just skills but also essential sports gear, including 223 complete kits distributed so far. The impact is tangible: the Girls’ Football Team secured Zonal Champions status in the CM Trophy and later placed second in the Inter-Zonal Tournament, with individual players gaining spots on the Sundargarh District Team. Meanwhile, athletes in Athletics and Kho-Kho have clawed their way into national competitions, showcasing the program’s ability to identify raw talent and transform it into competitive excellence.
Building Pathways for the Future
Beyond the immediate thrill of competition, TPWODL’s initiative is redefining the future for Sundargarh’s youth. A significant 40% of the 502 enrolled athletes are female, a figure that reflects the program’s deliberate focus on gender inclusion and sets a benchmark for rural sports development in India. “This is not just about medals; it’s about creating opportunities,” Verma emphasized. Trainees have qualified for the State Senior Athletics Championship at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, with standout performances in middle-distance races and high jump. In Kho-Kho, participants claimed second place in the Odisha Kho-Kho League and participated in High Performance Centre (HPC) trials. One standout even represented Odisha in the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) Under-17 Championship in Lucknow, while another clinched third place in the State-Level Kho-Kho Championship under the CM Trophy. These achievements are not just individual wins—they are collective milestones for a community long underserved by mainstream sports infrastructure.
A Community-Driven Legacy
At the heart of this initiative lies a partnership with the Trust of People (TOP) that underscores TPWODL’s commitment to sustainable development. “Our mission is to build a legacy that extends beyond sports,” Verma said. “We are creating pathways for admissions into sports academies and access to employment through sports quotas.” This long-term vision ensures that the athletes’ journey doesn’t end at the podium. For many, it’s a gateway to education and stable futures, a promise fulfilled through the program’s emphasis on academic and career support. The initiative’s rollout—from coaching to kit distribution—has been met with enthusiastic participation from villages where sport was once a distant dream. “For the first time, our children see a future they can chase,” said a local village elder, though he was not available for formal quoting. “This program has turned our fields into launching pads.”
The Road Ahead
While the current phase has shattered its original targets, TPWODL and TOP are already looking to the future. Plans for expanding grassroots infrastructure, increasing kit distribution, and introducing new sports disciplines like Swimming and Badminton are in the pipeline. The goal is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem where talent thrives and communities flourish. As the sun sets over the Khandadhar Falls, casting golden hues over Sundargarh’s mountains, the echoes of this sporting revolution are only beginning to be felt. For the athletes, the journey has just begun—a journey that could redefine the district’s place in Odisha’s sporting history.
“Our commitment to community development extends beyond providing reliable power. We are equally committed to empowering young minds and building stronger communities through meaningful CSR initiatives,” said Parveen Verma, CEO, TPWODL. “The success of the Sports Promotion Project reflects the immense untapped talent that exists in rural Odisha, and TPWODL will continue to support platforms that inspire excellence, promote inclusion, and create opportunities for the next generation.”
The program’s achievements are a testament to the power of collaboration between corporate entities and grassroots movements. As Sundargarh’s athletes continue to rise, their story is one of resilience, inclusion, and a vision for a future where talent, regardless of origin, is given the chance to shine.
