Wall Collapse in Subarnapur Kills Octogenarian, Injures Wife

An octogenarian was killed and his wife sustained serious injuries in a wall collapse in Subarnapur district on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred at Nayakpada village under Birmaharajpur police limits, where a rain-soaked wall of their home collapsed, trapping the couple underneath the debris.

The deceased has been identified as Sadananda Nayak, aged 80, while his wife, Premashila Nayak, aged 75, was critically injured. The couple lived alone, as their three sons and their families reside outside the village. Prolonged rainfall had weakened the walls of their old house, which had not been properly maintained.

Villagers responded quickly and were able to rescue Premashila, while Sadananda remained trapped until help arrived.

Local residents described the scene as chaotic, with neighbors rushing to the site upon hearing the collapse. "We heard a loud crash and ran over immediately," said one villager who wished to remain anonymous. "Premashila was screaming, and we pulled her out as fast as we could, but Sadananda was buried deep under the rubble."

The house, estimated to be over 50 years old, had shown signs of deterioration for months, according to villagers. Several noted that the structure had developed cracks during the monsoon season, but no repairs were undertaken due to financial constraints and the couple’s advanced age.

Birma Harajpur police confirmed they received the call around 3:15 PM and dispatched officers to the scene. A police official stated, "We arrived within minutes, but the debris was heavy and unstable. Rescue efforts were delayed slightly due to the need to avoid causing further collapse."

Emergency medical services arrived shortly after and transported Premashila to the Subarnapur District Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Doctors treating her said she suffered multiple fractures and internal injuries, and her prognosis is guarded.

The incident has drawn attention to the deteriorating condition of rural housing in the region, particularly among elderly residents living in isolation. Local authorities have urged villagers to report unsafe structures, especially during prolonged rainfall, to prevent similar tragedies.

As of Sunday evening, recovery operations continued to retrieve Sadananda’s body from the debris. Officials said the process was being conducted carefully to ensure the safety of rescue personnel.

The tragedy has left the small village of Nayakpada in mourning, with residents expressing grief over the loss of a well-known elder and concern for the safety of others living in similarly vulnerable homes.
