Kalahandi: Ghumura Dance, Karlapat Wildlife & Asurgarh

Sitting where southern and western Odisha meet, Kalahandi — the "Pot of Arts" — blends a substantial tribal population (Kondh, Gond, Bhunjia and others) with mainstream Odia Hindu culture, and is best known culturally for the martial-turned-performance Ghumura dance.

Festivals

Kalahandi Utsav (Ghumura Mahotsav) — an annual multi-day festival since 1997 showcasing Ghumura, folk music, drama and handicrafts, held mid-January at Bhawanipatna and Dharamgarh. Nuakhai is celebrated intensely, especially the local Dhan Nuakhai variant. Rath Yatra and other pan-Odisha festivals grow alongside Shakti and tribal worship.

Draws on both tribal and Odia traditions — rice, seasonal forest produce and staples like Dalma and Pakhala.

Culture & Crafts

The Ghumura dance — a former war dance depicted even on Konark''s Sun Temple carvings — is Kalahandi''s signature cultural export, alongside Dalkhai and other folk forms. The district''s heritage weaves Shaivism, Vaishnavism and Shakti worship.
