Sambalpur: Hirakud, Samaleswari & the Sital Sasthi Carnival

Sambalpur town is considered the cultural capital and gateway of Western Odisha, seated on the banks of the Mahanadi and best known for the Hirakud Dam and its association with Goddess Samaleswari.

• Hirakud Dam — one of the world''s longest earthen dams, with a reservoir big enough for boating and views from the Gandhi Minar watchtower.
• Maa Samaleswari Temple — the presiding deity of Sambalpur, with a nightly light-and-sound show.
• Huma Leaning Temple — a Shiva temple on the Mahanadi that famously tilts to one side.
• Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary — leopards, sambar and migratory birds along the Hirakud reservoir; once a hideout of freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai.
• Budharaja Hill Temple, Ushakothi Sanctuary, Pradhanpat Waterfall and the APJ Abdul Kalam Planetarium at Burla.

Festivals

The Sital Sasthi Carnival in June re-enacts the wedding of Shiva and Parvati across a week-long procession. Nuakhai in Bhadraba (Aug–Sep) marks the ritual first-eating of new rice. Durga Puja, Rath Yatra, Shivaratri and Ganesh Puja are all celebrated widely.

Food

Sambalpur''s everyday plate leans on Pakhala Bhata (fermented rice), Dalma and Odia sweets like Rasabali. Festival snacks include Sarsatia, Thethri, Manda Pitha and Mukudu.

Culture & Crafts

Sambalpur is the trading hub for Sambalpuri Ikat (Bandha) sarees, a GI-tagged tie-and-dye weaving tradition. The Karama folk dance is performed around Bhadrav Ekadashi. Sambalpuri (Kosali) is the dominant spoken language, alongside Kisan, Oraon and Kharia in tribal communities.
