In a remarkable achievement, the sanctuary has also set a record in revenue generation through ecotourism. Sources familiar with the matter reveal that in the fiscal year 2023-24, the sanctuary earned an impressive revenue of Rs 3.45 crore.

From Wildlife Haven to Tourist Hub

Anshu Pragyan Das, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Hirakud Wildlife Division, highlighted the sanctuary’s transformation. “Not only has it become a hotspot for wildlife enthusiasts, but it has also emerged as a major tourist destination,” said DFO Das.

Benefits for the Local Community

This newfound popularity has brought tangible benefits to the local community. The sanctuary now provides year-round livelihood opportunities for the locals, becoming an integral part of their lives.

Surging Tourist Numbers

The year 2023-24 witnessed a significant increase in visitors, with more than 70,000 tourists exploring the sanctuary. This marks a substantial leap from the 30,000 visitors recorded in the previous fiscal year.

Revenue Growth

The increase in visitors has directly translated into higher revenues, reaching Rs 3.45 crore compared to Rs 2.5 crore in the previous fiscal year. Officials attribute this growth to the sanctuary’s popularity among both local and out-of-state visitors.

Diverse Visitor Profile

More than half of the tourists hailed from Odisha itself, indicating a growing interest among locals. Additionally, 20% of visitors came from the neighboring state of West Bengal, with the remaining 30% from various states of India and abroad.

Activities and Attractions

Visitors to the sanctuary can enjoy a range of activities, including safari, cruises, trekking, hiking, kayaking, and bird-watching. These offerings have contributed significantly to the sanctuary’s popularity and increased footfall.

Local Communities at the Helm

Behind this success story are 87 local families who have played a pivotal role in the sanctuary’s management. Their hard work and dedication have been instrumental in achieving this record-high revenue collection, emphasized an official.
