An OPAF jawan, Man Rasapeda, sustained serious injuries and a police vehicle was vandalised when a suspect and six to seven associates attacked officers with sharp weapons near a petrol pump in Kantabanji, Balangir, on Sunday night while they attempted to arrest an accused in a recent assault case. Police nabbed Gobinda Suna and Roshan Cook; other accused fled. A separate case (No. 160/2026) was registered, and special teams are tracing the absconding suspects using call records and CCTV footage.

What happened during the attack?

According to reports, the police had registered Case No. 159/2026 following a clash near Sunny Garage two days earlier. Acting on information, a team reached near a petrol pump to apprehend the accused. Suddenly, the prime suspect and 6–7 associates attacked the police with sharp weapons. In the assault, OPAF jawan Man Rasapeda sustained serious injuries. He was first treated at Kantabanji and later shifted to Bhima Bhoi Medical College, Balangir. The attackers also vandalised the police vehicle during the incident. Tension gripped Kantabanji after a police team came under deadly attack by miscreants on Sunday night while attempting to arrest an accused in a recent assault case.

What actions have police taken?

Police managed to nab Gobinda Suna and Roshan Cook, while other accused fled. A separate case No. 160/2026 has been registered regarding the attack on police. Special teams have been formed to track the absconding accused, with call records and CCTV footage under scrutiny.
