Where are bauxite deposits found in Odisha?
India’s major bauxite resources are concentrated in the East Coast deposits of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Odisha had about 2,057 million tonnes of bauxite resources. The state accounted for 41 percent of India’s bauxite resources. In Odisha, bauxite occurs in Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Kendujhar, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada and Sundargarh districts.
Expanding on this distribution, the East Coast belt—stretching along the shores of the Bay of Bengal—hosts the bulk of the nation’s bauxite wealth. Odisha’s share of over two billion tonnes places it at the forefront of India’s mineral endowment, contributing nearly two‑fifths of the national total.
Within Odisha, the occurrence of bauxite is not uniform but spread across eight districts. Balangir, located in the western part of the state, hosts deposits that have historically supported alumina refineries. Kalahandi, where the Karlapat block is situated, adds to the state’s portfolio with its greenfield potential. Kandhamal and Kendujhar districts further augment the resource base, often presenting ore with varying grades that cater to different end‑use specifications.

The geographic dispersion means that infrastructure development—such as roads, railways, and power supply—must be tailored to each locality to enable feasible extraction.

Mining activities can generate employment, stimulate ancillary industries, and contribute to state revenues through royalties and taxes. Bauxite is the only commercial ore used to produce aluminium. Aluminium is the second most abundant metal used by industry after silica-based materials. It finds applications across transport, construction, power, chemicals and manufacturing.

Aluminium’s popularity stems from a unique combination of properties: low density, high strength‑to‑weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistance, good thermal and electrical conductivity, and recyclability. These attributes make it indispensable in the transportation sector, where it is used for automobile bodies, aircraft frames, and railway components, contributing to fuel efficiency and emissions reduction.
In construction, aluminium appears in window frames, façades, roofing systems, and structural components, offering durability and aesthetic flexibility. The power sector utilises aluminium for transmission lines and bus bars due to its conductivity and lighter weight compared with copper, which reduces sag and support structure costs.
