On Monday around 2 am, on‑duty medicine specialist Dr Sudipta Rout was allegedly assaulted by Gurmeet Singh inside Bargarh Community Health Centre after Singh, who had accompanied a child with sickle cell disease seeking treatment, demanded an immediate blood‑pressure check and, when asked to wait, struck the doctor with a wooden stool, causing a deep head wound and injuries to his forehead and hand, according to police and hospital officials today.

What triggered the attack?

The incident began when a child with sickle cell disease experiencing chest pain was brought to Bargarh CHC around 2 am. Dr Sudipta Rout administered emergency medication and directed the child to the ward for further treatment by nursing staff. Shortly afterwards, Gurmeet Singh, one of the accompanying men, returned and asked the doctor to check his blood pressure. Rout advised him to wait about 10 minutes because he was sweating and an immediate reading would not be accurate.

What did the doctor say about the incident?

Dr Rout said, “I had just finished treating the child and sent him to the ward. When the man asked me to check his blood pressure, I requested him to sit for a while. But he attacked me with a stool without any provocation. He might have been under the influence, considering his aggressive behaviour.”

How have authorities responded?

Medical officer Dr SP Naik said the hospital lodged a complaint with police, Dr Rout is stable, and it is unfortunate an on‑duty doctor was assaulted on hospital premises. Bargarh SP RN Satapathy said the Town SDPO and IIC rushed to the CHC, received the complaint, arrested the accused and produced him in court. Investigation is underway to determine whether Singh was under the influence of alcohol and if he has a history of similar offences. The SP added that security has been intensified with round‑the‑clock police deployment to prevent recurrence.
