Boudh District Violence Escalates: Protest Over Police Detentions Sparks Political Tensions

Under a sweltering July sun, the village of Hatagaon in Boudh district became the epicenter of a spiraling conflict between law enforcement and local residents. The violence began early Saturday when a five-member police team, led by Sub-Inspector Yashobant Kanhar, arrived at the village to investigate claims of ganja smuggling. What was meant to be a routine operation turned into a chaotic confrontation that left officers injured and the district teetering on the edge of crisis.

'The police arrived without any warning, and the situation was already tense. They were told to leave, but they refused,' said one local resident, whose voice trembled as he recounted the events. 'It was a group of villagers protecting their homes from being used as a drug hub.'

According to Boudh SDPO Laren Routray, the police received intelligence that a criminal network had stockpiled ganja in the village. The innocent are being picked up without evidence, and the real culprits are still at large,' Pradhan said, his voice rising as he addressed the crowd. 'The police have a duty to protect the people, not to conduct midnight raids based on baseless accusations.'

Pradhan, a prominent BJP legislator, raised concerns about the alleged lack of transparency in the police crackdown. He accused authorities of using aggressive tactics, including late-night raids and the arbitrary detention of villagers. 'If the police are acting on credible evidence, why are we still seeing protests across the district?' he asked, his words drawing cheers from the protesters.

The exchange between Pradhan and the police escalated to a confrontational level, with both sides accusing each other of overreach. While the MLA emphasized the need for legal accountability for those who attacked the officers, he also urged restraint in the arrest process. 'There must be a clear distinction between criminals and ordinary villagers,' he insisted.

The incident has cast a spotlight on the persistent issue of ganja smuggling in Boudh district, a region historically known for its spiritual heritage and ancient Buddhist stupas. While the police claim the operation was aimed at dismantling a drug network, local residents argue that the area has long been used as a transit route for illicit substances.

'Ganja has been a problem here for years, but why is it always the poor villagers who suffer the consequences?' asked another protester, a farmer whose brother was among those detained. 'If the real drug lords are being protected, then this is just another case of political and police collusion.'

The police have yet to provide concrete evidence linking the arrested individuals to the alleged smuggling operation. However, they maintain that the crackdown is part of an ongoing effort to curb narcotics trafficking across the district.
