Odisha Day: Commemorating History and Progress
On April 1, Odisha Day, or Utkala Dibasa, is celebrated to commemorate the formation of the state of Odisha { Formation of Odisha}. The occasion is joyously celebrated throughout the state, with individuals adorning their homes and public spaces with flags, banners, and flowers in the colors of the state flag. This symbolizes the vibrant culture and heritage of Odisha.
History of Odisha
The movement for a separate Odisha state began three decades before its formation with the establishment of Utkal Sammilani, leading to the foundation of a separate Odisha Province. The movement gained momentum under the leadership of figures like Utkala Gouraba Madhusudan Das, Utkala Mani Gopabandhu Das, Maharaja Sri Ram Chandra Bhanj Deo, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati, and others, supported by the public. The newly formed Odisha initially comprised six districts: Cuttack, Puri, Baleswar, Sambalpur, Koraput, and Ganjam, with its capital in Cuttack. John Austin Hubback became the first Governor of Odisha Province.
As of April 1, 2023, Odisha has expanded to 30 districts.
Celebrations of Odisha Dibasa
Odisha Dibasa or Utkala Dibasa is celebrated across the state every year on April 1. The streets come alive with thousands of displays and floats, adding to the festive atmosphere. Local politicians often organize competitions like fireworks contests, adding a dazzling spectacle to the sky. Families across the country arrange cultural programs, including singing and dancing, to mark the occasion. Utkala Dibasa is a day of remembrance for all Odia people who have contributed to the unity and progress of the state.
