Odisha, Odisha — Rajasthan is experiencing an alarming increase in cancer cases, with the lip, oral cavity, and pharynx, and the digestive organs accounting for the highest prevalence of the disease, according to a recent study.

Background

The study, based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10-coded data of cancer patients, analysed the geographic distribution of patients from different districts of Rajasthan. The data revealed that the average cancer incidence in the State is estimated at 134.57 cases per one lakh population, significantly above India’s national average of 113 cases. The study has highlighted the need for early detection and treatment of cancer, particularly in women, where the incidence of breast and cervical cancer is on the rise.

Community Impact

The study further revealed that Jaipur is the worst hit city in the State in terms of the number of cancer patients per one lakh population. The city reported a staggering 2,837 patients, estimated as 332.24 per one lakh population, followed by Alwar with 1,031 patients, and Ajmer with 855 patients. The high prevalence of oral, digestive, and respiratory cancers in the State has been linked to lifestyle factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and exposure to pesticides. Medico-legal activist Shri Gopal Kabra, Director (Clinical) at Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital in Jaipur, attributed the rising incidence of cancer to these lifestyle factors.

What Happens Next

The study’s findings have significant implications for the State’s healthcare system, particularly in terms of the need for early detection and treatment of cancer. The study has also highlighted the importance of addressing lifestyle factors that contribute to the high prevalence of cancer in the State. The State government must take immediate action to implement effective measures to reduce the incidence of cancer, including public awareness campaigns and healthcare initiatives. The community must also be educated about the risks of cancer and the importance of early detection and treatment. As the State continues to grapple with the alarming rise in cancer cases, it is essential that the government and healthcare providers work together to address this critical public health issue.
