Scrub Typhus Cases Rise in Sundargarh, Health Authorities Alert

Health authorities in Sundargarh district are on alert after a sharp rise in scrub typhus cases, with 668 blood samples testing positive from January to August 2026, including 341 in August alone. According to official reports, the tribal-dominated district recorded the highest number of cases in Rourkela (55), followed by Lathikata block (39), Sundargarh town (29) and Bisra (24). Chief district medical and public health officer Dr SC Mohanty attributed the surge to heavy rainfall fostering vegetation growth and breeding of chigger mites. He noted that awareness campaigns are underway and urged people to wear protective clothing while outdoors.

What is causing the increase in scrub typhus cases?

Dr SC Mohanty said, “Usually, scrub typhus cases rise during the rainy season. Awareness activities are underway and people are being educated to properly dress and cover their body parts while engaging in outdoor activities in vulnerable areas.” He attributed the increase to heavy rainfall causing vegetation growth and simultaneous breeding of chigger mites. He said there was no need to panic and advised people with symptoms to go for test and seek medical help in time.

Where are the cases concentrated?

In August alone, 1,655 blood samples were tested, of which 341 returned positive for scrub typhus. Rourkela reported the highest number of cases with 55, followed by Lathikata block (39), Sundargarh town (29) and Bisra (24). The remaining cases were distributed across other areas of the district. From January to August, a total of 4,534 samples were collected and 668 tested positive.

What measures are being taken to control the outbreak?

Dr Mohanty said medicines are available at all government health facilities across the district. Initial screening facility is available at the community health centres (CHCs). Confirmatory testing of blood samples for scrub typhus is being conducted at the Sundargarh district headquarters hospital, Rourkela Government Hospital and private hospitals. He added that awareness activities are ongoing and people are being educated to wear protective clothing while outdoors.

How does this year's data compare with previous years?

In 2024, the district recorded at least 2,025 positive cases from 8,657 tests. Between January and October 22, 2025, 1,546 cases were found positive from 7,358 tests. With increased focus on detection and treatment, testing numbers have risen significantly over the past couple of years.
