Rourkela Airport Expansion Plans Announced

Rourkela airport in Odisha's Sundargarh district is set for a major expansion, with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) taking over operations. The expansion project will enable bigger aircraft and night landing facilities, but may displace around 1,500 families, making rehabilitation a key concern.

After years of protests and sustained public demand, the airport is finally poised for transformation, official sources confirmed on Wednesday. The facility, currently under the administrative control of the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), will soon be transferred to the Airports Authority of India, paving the way for upgraded infrastructure, larger aircraft operations, and the installation of a night landing system. The expansion project is expected to significantly improve air connectivity for the Smart City, addressing a long-standing infrastructure gap that has hindered regional development.

The airport, currently under the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), will soon be transferred to AAI, paving the way for upgraded infrastructure and larger aircraft operations.

Although flight services to Rourkela were introduced earlier, operations have remained inconsistent, with the absence of a night landing system and operational limitations during adverse weather affecting regular flight services. During the Men's Hockey World Cup, a 72-seater aircraft operated daily to the city, but the service was discontinued after only a few months. Earlier this year, a nine-seater aircraft met with an accident, discouraging many passengers from opting for the smaller aircraft and further eroding public confidence in the unreliable service. These operational setbacks, combined with the lack of night landing capabilities and weather-related restrictions, have left the airport largely underutilised despite its strategic importance.

Union Minister Jual Oram said the expansion process would begin soon, with discussions underway with the Centre, the Odisha government, and RSP authorities. He expressed confidence that improved air connectivity would boost regional development and ease travel for the public. "The process for airport expansion will begin very soon. I am in constant discussion with the Central and State governments and RSP authorities," Oram stated. "Expanding flight services will not only benefit lakhs of people but also provide a lot of convenience to students." Meanwhile, the local MLA and District Planning Board chairman, Durga Charan Tanti, assured that proper rehabilitation measures would be undertaken for families displaced by the expansion project.

The proposed expansion is expected to benefit thousands of residents, industrial stakeholders, and students, including those studying at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, which attracts students from across India and abroad. However, the project's human cost has sparked serious concern among the affected communities. The demolition of nearly 1,500 RSP quarters represents one of the biggest challenges in the project, making the rehabilitation and relocation of affected families a critical priority.

Residents have voiced both support for development and anxiety about displacement. Abinash Pradhan, a Rourkela resident, told OTV: "We want development, and we want a good airport here with world-class facilities. It is a good thing. But the 1,500 people living here are not staying illegally. They are not migrants either. They are the residents of Rourkela. They have dedicated 60 years of their lives to the plant and worked hard. They have built their houses by investing their hard-earned money and savings, and their faith and emotions are deeply connected to the houses. In my opinion, if this is happening, they should be rehabilitated first, and I think that would be better." Another resident, Arabinda Das, emphasised the airport's necessity while highlighting the rehabilitation challenge: "An airport is barely essential. Connectivity is vital for the development of a city. Today, air connectivity is even more crucial because one will find that most parents living in Rourkela have children residing outside the city. Therefore, an airport is definitely needed for the city. However, another challenge that has emerged is what will happen to these residents, which remains a matter of concern for everyone. Since so much land and so many houses will be demolished, where will they go? We have to see how the administration faces this challenge and what it does." As the expansion moves forward, the administration's handling of rehabilitation will be closely watched by all stakeholders.
