A 15-year-old boy from Nilibandha Pada in Bargarh district developed dizziness and vomiting after consuming an expired antibiotic issued at the Niramaya medicine centre of Bargarh community health centre (CHC). Mukesh Sahu visited the CHC three days ago after a cut injury on his finger and was prescribed Cefpodoxime Proxetil, which he collected from the Niramaya medicine counter. On Tuesday, Chief District Medical Officer Dr Prasant Kishore Dash directed the in-charge of Bargarh CHC to conduct an inquiry and submit a report. The family later found the medicine strip had expired in May and demanded a thorough inquiry and action against those responsible.
According to the allegation, Mukesh Sahu (15) of Nilibandha Pada in Bargarh district had suffered a cut injury on his finger and visited Bargarh CHC three days ago. He was prescribed an antibiotic, Cefpodoxime Proxetil, and asked to collect it from the Niramaya medicine counter. After taking the medicine, Mukesh reportedly developed dizziness and vomiting. The family said they later checked the strip and found it was expired in May. Mukesh’s family has demanded a thorough inquiry and action against those responsible. “I came to know about it today. I have directed the in charge of Bargarh CHC to conduct an inquiry and submit the report for further action,” Dash said, adding that the medicine strip should have been checked by the pharmacist before being issued.
