Sundargarh, Odisha — A school teacher, Bijay Nayak, died of a suspected cardiac arrest following a road accident in Sundargarh town on Friday morning. The tragedy has shocked the local education community and prompted an immediate police inquiry.
Background
Bijay Nayak, a resident of Rangadhipa, had been employed as a teacher at the government high school in Balishankara for over a decade. On the morning of the accident he was travelling with his wife, Sushama Nayak – also a teacher – in their Bolero SUV. They set off from Mahulpali towards Sundargarh at approximately 08:00, intending to reach the school for the day’s first period. Near Tangarpali, close to a gas agency, their vehicle collided with a scooter. Witnesses reported that the impact threw the car into a spin, after which Mr Nayak appeared to lose consciousness and suffered a cardiac arrest.
Emergency services arrived within minutes of the crash. Paramedics administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation on site before transporting the injured parties to the nearest hospital, Sundargarh District Hospital. Despite the rapid response, doctors pronounced Mr Nayak dead shortly after his arrival. His wife sustained superficial cuts and bruises but remained conscious and was discharged after receiving basic treatment. The scooter rider escaped with minor injuries and was taken for observation as a precaution.
Community Impact
The loss of Mr Nayak has reverberated through the town’s schools, where colleagues and students have gathered to mourn a respected educator. Teachers have organised a condolence register, and several pupils have written letters expressing their grief. Local residents have also held a candlelight vigil outside the school premises, underscoring the deep personal connections he forged over his years of service. The school administration has announced a day of mourning, during which classes will be suspended and a memorial service will be held later in the week.
What Happens Next
The police investigation will focus on establishing the precise cause of the collision, including whether speed, road conditions or a breach of traffic regulations contributed to the crash. Officers have collected statements from eyewitnesses, examined the vehicle’s black‑box data, and are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby shops. The enquiry is ongoing, and the authorities have pledged to keep the family informed of any developments. In the meantime, community groups have pledged financial assistance to support the Nayak family, and a fundraising programme has been launched through the local teachers’ association.
