Sambalpur, Odisha — The Chief Minister of Odisha recently launched the ‘Drink From Tap’ project in Sambalpur, aiming to provide safe and uninterrupted piped water supply to households. The initiative, flagged off during a public event at the city’s central water treatment plant, marks a significant step toward addressing long-standing water scarcity issues in the district.

Background Sambalpur, a district grappling with erratic water availability for decades, has seen sporadic government interventions to improve infrastructure. Previous schemes, including borewell drilling and reservoir construction, yielded limited success due to poor maintenance and inadequate coverage. The ‘Drink From Tap’ project, however, is the first to prioritise direct household connectivity, leveraging modern filtration technology and decentralised distribution networks.

Sequence of Events According to official reports, the project’s first phase involves installing 1,200 km of pipelines, 50 new water ATMs, and 10 desalination units to treat brackish groundwater. The CM, during the launch, emphasised that the initiative aligns with the state’s “Har Ghar Jal” mission and will be completed within 18 months. A task force comprising engineers and local officials was constituted on-site to oversee implementation, with a pilot project already underway in three municipal wards.

Community Impact Residents, particularly in peri-urban areas, have welcomed the move, citing reduced reliance on contaminated sources and private vendors. Local councillor Arun Kumar Meher stated, “This will cut waterborne diseases and ease the burden on women who walk miles daily to fetch water.” However, concerns persist about sustaining supply during dry seasons, with some farmers questioning the project’s focus on urban zones over rural pockets. The district administration has pledged to address these gaps in subsequent phases.

Local Significance Sambalpur’s selection for the project underscores its strategic importance as Odisha’s northern hub. The district’s industrial growth, including the proposed Sambalpur Industrial Park, hinges on reliable infrastructure. Water security, officials argue, will attract investments and bolster the region’s agrarian economy, which employs over 60% of the population.

What Happens Next The state government has allocated ₹450 crore for the project’s initial phase, with progress reviews scheduled quarterly. Civil society groups have been invited to monitor implementation, ensuring transparency. If successful, the model may be replicated in six other districts facing similar challenges. For now, Sambalpur awaits the first test: whether the taps will truly flow for all.
