Odisha, Odisha — The Janata Dal (United) released a list of 24 leaders as members of the party’s national executive committee, with Nitish Kumar serving as party president.
Background
The JD(U) announced the appointments on 22 April 2026, a day after eight‑time legislator Shrawan Kumar was chosen as legislative party leader. The move was intended to reinforce the party’s leadership and organisational structure ahead of the forthcoming electoral cycle.
The newly constituted committee includes Sanjay Kumar Jha as working president and Chandeshwar Prasad Chandravanshi as vice‑president. Alok Kumar Suman, MP from Gopalganj, has been appointed treasurer. Twelve members have been named national general secretaries, eight as secretaries, and two Muslim leaders – Kahkeshan Praveen and Maulana Ghulam Rasool Baliawi – have been appointed general secretaries. Mohammad Nisar has also been listed as a party secretary. Notably, Nishant Kumar, son of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, does not appear on the list despite having joined the JD(U) on 8 March.
Community Impact
The JD(U)’s restructuring is expected to influence the party’s base in Champaran, Jehanabad and Gopalganj, where it enjoys a strong foothold. The inclusion of Muslim leaders in senior roles has been welcomed as a step toward greater diversity and representation within the organisation.
Party officials have indicated that the appointments form part of a broader strategy to revitalise grassroots mobilisation and to present a unified front ahead of the state elections.
What Happens Next
The party plans to launch a statewide yatra led by Nishant Kumar, scheduled to begin on 3 May from the Champaran region. The tour is designed to allow the young leader to engage directly with voters and to articulate the JD(U)’s policy agenda. Observers will watch closely to gauge the yatra’s effect on the party’s electoral prospects.
The national executive committee is expected to convene regularly to review progress, address emerging challenges and refine campaign strategies. With Nitish Kumar at the helm, the JD(U) aims to sustain its focus on good governance and development across Odisha.
