Sundargarh, Odisha — Vedanta Aluminium has launched a multi‑pronged heat‑relief programme across Jharsuguda, aiming to provide easier access to safe drinking water for more than two lakh residents during the peak summer months.

Background

Jharsuguda, a key industrial hub in western Odisha, has been grappling with severe heat‑wave conditions that have heightened health risks for both the local population and the workforce in surrounding factories. The district’s reliance on limited water infrastructure has historically left commuters, daily‑wage earners and outdoor workers vulnerable to dehydration. In response, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has stepped in with a series of interventions designed to mitigate these challenges and bolster community resilience.

On 24 April 2026 the company rolled out six water kiosks—locally known as Jalachhatras—at high‑footfall points such as BTM Chowk, Kishan Chowk, New Bus Stand Chowk, Badheimunda Chowk and Old Bus Stand Chowk. In addition, it expanded its drinking‑water distribution network through tankers and dedicated points at more than 20 locations across the district, ensuring a steady supply to remote habitations. Inside the plant, over 60 hydration kiosks were installed to serve roughly 12 000 employees, business partners and drivers, offering water, oral rehydration solution and buttermilk. C Chandru, CEO of Vedanta Jharsuguda, said, “The health and wellbeing of our employees and the communities around us remain a top priority. As temperatures rise, ensuring access to safe drinking water becomes imperative. Through last‑mile interventions such as water kiosks and doorstep supply via tankers, we will continue to support people in tackling challenges associated with summer heat.” Manish Mishra, Senior Manager – Projects at Lizmontagens India Pvt. Ltd., added, “Working outdoors can be a challenge during the summer months, but the hydration kiosks set up within the plant, offering easy and timely access to water, ORS, and buttermilk, have been a great support.”

Community Impact

The initiative is expected to benefit over two lakh people, providing them with reliable drinking water and reducing the incidence of heat‑related ailments. Local authorities have welcomed the effort, noting that the additional water points complement municipal services and relieve pressure on existing supply chains. Health officials anticipate a decline in dehydration cases, especially among vulnerable groups such as outdoor labourers and schoolchildren who rely on the kiosks during their daily commutes.

For the residents of Jharsuguda, the water kiosks represent more than a convenience; they are a lifeline during an increasingly harsh summer season. The presence of ORS and buttermilk at the plant’s hydration stations also underscores a broader commitment to employee welfare, reinforcing Vedanta’s reputation as a socially responsible employer in the region. By targeting both community and workforce needs, the programme aligns with Odisha’s wider objectives of improving public health infrastructure and fostering sustainable industrial development.

What Happens Next

Vedanta Aluminium plans to monitor the usage of the kiosks and tanker deliveries throughout the summer, with the possibility of expanding the network to additional high‑need areas if demand rises. The company has pledged to continue its “last‑mile” water interventions, aiming to set a benchmark for corporate‑led climate‑adaptation measures in western Odisha.
